Inherited IRA RMD Calculator

An inherited account follows beneficiary rules rather than ordinary owner rules. Use this inherited IRA RMD calculator to check a supported adult scenario, estimate the annual amount and see whether a ten-year deadline applies.

For supported adult beneficiaries. The owner’s required beginning date is the legal first-payment deadline, not simply the date they first took a withdrawal.

First-year factors are reduced by one for each later year. This estimates the current annual minimum and excludes unpaid death-year amounts.

Supports adult nonspouse beneficiaries after deaths in 2020 or later, for distribution years from 2025. Special beneficiary elections require custodian review.

How to use this tool

  1. Step 1

Enter the previous December 31 balance and the original owner’s death year.

  2. Step 2

Choose the account type, beneficiary category and required-beginning-date status.

  3. Step 3

Review the annual estimate and final deadline together before arranging a withdrawal.

Worked example

For a traditional IRA inherited in 2025 after the owner’s required beginning date, a beneficiary turning 55 in 2026 has an initial factor of 31.6. With $100,000 and an owner who died at age 80, the estimated 2026 minimum is $3,164.56. A standard ten-year beneficiary must also empty the account by December 31, 2035.

Annual RMDs and the ten-year rule

The ten-year deadline does not always mean you can wait until the last year. A standard adult beneficiary inheriting after the owner’s required beginning date generally has annual minimums as well as the final distribution deadline. If that owner died before the required beginning date, the standard ten-year method generally has no annual minimum in years one through nine.

An original Roth IRA owner is treated as dying before the required beginning date. The inherited IRA RMD calculator uses that distinction for a standard ten-year beneficiary; it does not apply the original owner’s lifetime Roth exemption to beneficiaries.

Which beneficiary category should I choose?

Use the ordinary adult option only if you are a nonspouse individual who is not an eligible designated beneficiary. An eligible adult can include someone disabled, chronically ill or no more than ten years younger than the original owner. Confirm eligibility with the custodian.

Spousal choices, minor-child transitions, successor beneficiaries, trusts and estates have additional rules. Selecting those scenarios returns guidance rather than an invented minimum. Pre-2020 inheritances and distribution years before 2025 are outside this tool’s scope.

Understanding the factor and final-year result

The first beneficiary factor comes from the Single Life Expectancy Table at the age reached in the year after death. For supported nonspouse life-expectancy calculations, later years subtract one each year. After the required beginning date, the longer applicable remaining expectancy may be used.

A final-year result uses your entered balance as an estimate. The actual account, including any later gains, must be fully distributed by the deadline. An unpaid owner death-year RMD is separate from this calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a beneficiary IRA RMD calculator?

Yes, for the adult scenarios listed in the form. A beneficiary account is an inherited account; naming it differently does not change its withdrawal rules.

Does the ten-year rule replace annual distributions?

Not always. The original owner’s required beginning date and your beneficiary classification determine whether annual minimums also apply.

Can I calculate an inherited Roth IRA withdrawal?

Choose Roth IRA and the supported beneficiary category. A standard ten-year beneficiary generally has no annual minimum before the final year, but must meet the full-distribution deadline.

What if I inherited from my spouse?

Select the spousal scenario for the relevant guidance. Keeping an inherited account, electing spouse treatment and rolling funds into your own IRA can produce different outcomes.

Can I use a current age instead of my birth year?

Use the birth year requested. The tool needs your age in the year following the owner’s death to set the initial factor.
