RMD Starting Age Calculator

Find the year when ordinary IRA withdrawals begin and the first two deadline dates. This RMD age calculator uses your complete birth date, including the July 1, 1949 cutoff that a birth-year-only tool cannot distinguish.

FIRST IRA DISTRIBUTION YEAR

2026

Starting age73
First deadlineApril 1, 2027
Next annual deadlineDecember 31, 2027

Your first withdrawal relates to 2026; the following annual amount relates to 2027.

Ordinary IRA cohort schedule, with the 1959 proposed-rule assumption identified. Historical dates do not assess relief, corrections or penalties.

How to use this tool

  1. Step 1

Enter your full birth date rather than only your current age.

  2. Step 2

Review the starting age and the year to which the first withdrawal relates.

  3. Step 3

Compare the first and second deadlines before choosing whether to delay a payment.

Worked example

Someone born March 15, 1953 turns 73 in 2026. The first IRA RMD is for 2026, with an April 1, 2027 deadline. The next annual amount is for 2027 and is due by December 31, 2027.

Starting-age groups explained

People born before July 1, 1949 reached their historical starting age at 70½. Those born July 1, 1949 through 1950 fall into the age-72 group. For births in 1951–1958, the starting age is 73; for 1960 or later it is 75.

For 1959 births, this calculator uses age 73 as a planning assumption under the IRS proposed clarification. The regulations sourced here reserve the final rule for that cohort. Check for subsequent guidance before that cohort’s first distribution year.

A distribution year is not its deadline year

The starting year is the year the first minimum relates to. The first payment can generally be delayed to April 1 of the next year. Subsequent annual minimums are generally due each December 31.

Delaying the first payment can put two required withdrawals into the same calendar year. The RMD age calculator displays both dates so that distinction is easy to see.

Scope and historical exceptions

This starting-age result covers ordinary original-owner IRAs. Roth owners, inherited accounts and workplace-plan retirement exceptions need their own rules. Use the relevant tool from the calculator menu.

The 2020 waiver suspended certain required withdrawals that year. Historical output is a cohort schedule, not a decision about missed payments, waivers or penalties.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the RMD age calculator ask for a date?

Births on opposite sides of July 1, 1949 can have different historical starting ages. A complete date also lets us calculate the year of reaching 70½.

What if I was born in 1960?

The standard starting age is 75, so the first ordinary IRA distribution year is 2035 and its first deadline is April 1, 2036.

Does being employed postpone an IRA RMD?

An ordinary IRA generally has age-based requirements even if the owner works. Qualifying current-employer plans can have different rules.

Does this calculate the amount too?

This page calculates timing. Use the homepage or workplace tool for an amount based on a prior-year balance and an applicable factor.
