RMD Tax Withholding Calculator

Work out how much of a retirement withdrawal could reach your bank account after selected withholding. This RMD tax withholding calculator separates the gross amount, taxable portion, withholding and estimated net payment.

ESTIMATED NET PAYMENT

$17,000.00

Gross distribution$20,000.00
Taxable base$20,000.00
Federal withheld$2,000.00
State withheld$1,000.00
Total withheld$3,000.00

The selected rates apply to the taxable portion. Withholding is not your final tax liability.

Domestic percentage-based illustration. Withholding is applied to the entered taxable portion; state, periodic-payment and nonresident rules are not inferred.

How to use this tool

  1. Step 1

Enter the gross distribution amount; use an amount calculator first if needed.

  2. Step 2

Choose the taxable percentage and your federal and state withholding rates.

  3. Step 3

Review dollars withheld and the net payment, then confirm your election with the payer.

Worked example

For a fully taxable $20,000 withdrawal, selecting 10% federal and 5% state withholding sets aside $2,000 and $1,000. The estimated net payment is $17,000. These elected percentages are not a calculation of your marginal or effective tax rate.

Withholding is a payment toward tax

Withholding moves part of a payment to a tax authority on your behalf. The amount withheld is not necessarily what you ultimately owe. Your tax return depends on other income, deductions, credits, filing status and applicable rules.

The RMD tax withholding calculator does not calculate a tax bracket, recommend a rate or submit an election. Compare the output with the payer’s process and your broader tax estimate.

Federal elections and the default rate

For many domestic nonperiodic distributions that are not eligible rollover distributions, federal withholding defaults to 10% unless a permitted election changes it. Form W-4R is used for that type of election. Periodic pension payments generally use Form W-4P instead.

An RMD is not an eligible rollover distribution, so the familiar mandatory 20% eligible-rollover rule does not automatically apply. Payments abroad, nonresident status and other restrictions can change available elections.

Taxable portions and state differences

This estimate applies both selected rates to the taxable portion you enter. If 80% of a $20,000 payment is taxable, the modeled withholding base is $16,000. Your payer or state may use a different base or require a particular method.

A state percentage here is a user-entered assumption. The RMD tax withholding calculator does not determine residency, state exemptions or mandatory state withholding. Total selected rates cannot exceed 100%.

Frequently asked questions

Does withholding reduce the RMD I satisfy?

The gross distributed amount includes amounts withheld for tax. The net payment is what remains after withholding; confirm reporting with the custodian.

Is 10% federal withholding enough?

It may be too little or too much depending on your complete tax situation. The default is not a recommendation or a safe-harbor calculation.

Can I choose zero withholding?

The model accepts zero. Whether your payer can honor that election depends on the payment and applicable rules.

Does this estimate my final income tax?

No. It calculates selected withholding and net proceeds only. It does not determine total federal or state tax liability.
